    Dear Parent or Guardian,

The supplemental education program in the Northampton Area School District provides students with targeted instruction in reading and math based upon a Response to Instruction and Intervention model. (Please see the Response to Instruction and Intervention brochure which accompanies this letter.)

Supplemental reading and math groups will be provided for students who require targeted instruction in either or both of these subjects. These groups will use an intervention program that correlates with the core classroom program. Your child may be scheduled to receive this small group instruction during Intervention/Enrichment (I/E) Tier Time.  Each grade level will have 30-40 minutes of I/E Tier Time daily during which all students will receive targeted instruction or enrichment based on individual needs.  Since I/E Tier Time is incorporated into the schedule, students will not miss any subject area instruction.

Identification of students will be based upon the following information:

    • Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS Next) – Assesses basic early literacy skills, or the essential skills that every child must master to become a proficient reader: Phonemic Awareness, Alphabetic Principle, (including advanced phonics and word attack skills), Vocabulary & language skills, Reading Comprehension, and Accurate & Fluent reading of connected text (for reading only)
    • Study Island Benchmark Assessment for both math and reading

    • Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) scores for both math and reading

    • Other classroom assessments for both math and reading.

Please note that this letter pertains to all parents of students in grades 1-6. It does not mean your child will necessarily need the extra instruction detailed above.

If it is determined that your child will receive supplemental instruction in either or both reading and math, you will be sent a letter of notification. Should you have any questions, please call your school’s supplemental education teacher.
