School-Wide Positive Behavior Support Program

School-Wide Positive Behavior Support Program (SWPBS): A Brief Overview

I’m very excited about a new program that will be implemented this year at the Northampton Borough Elementary Schools called School-Wide Positive Behavior Support (SWPBS).  This program replaces the previous Character Education Program.

The staff at the Northampton Borough Elementary Schools believe that optimal student achievement, both academic and behavior, can be attained utilizing a proactive systems approach for creating and maintaining a safe and effective learning environment.

Students will be explicitly taught behaviors that they will be expected to demonstrate throughout the building including the classroom, hallway, bathroom, bus, playground, cafeteria, and assemblies.  After teaching these behaviors, teachers will reward students with a star ticket for demonstrating “shining star” behaviors.  Star tickets earned will be eligible to be redeemed for prizes.  Also, monthly assemblies will be held to help reinforce the “shining star” behaviors students are expected to demonstrate.

Expected behaviors can be summarized as:

S – Support Safety

T – Take Responsibility

A – Always Do Your Best

R  – Respect Myself and Others

I feel strongly about the benefits of working together as a team and being respectful to each other.  Each day my students will be encouraged to express these quality character traits.  Doing so will ensure a successful 4th grade year.
