Northampton Area School District
School-Wide Positive Behavior Support (SWPBS)
During the 2009-2010 academic term, the Northampton Area School District began planning for the implementation of School-wide Positive Behavior Support (SWPBS), which is a systems approach to creating and maintaining a safe and effective learning environment for all students. This is accomplished by improving behavior and academic performance through the explicit teaching and reinforcing of positive or expected behavior.
This district-wide initiative is guided by a data driven, team approach to reinforce positive behaviors and expectations among students, faculty and staff, while increasing academic achievement. Attention is focused on creating and sustaining primary (school-wide & classroom), secondary or strategic (group), and tertiary (individual) systems of support that improves the outcomes for all children and youth by minimizing problem behavior and increasing positive or expected behavior.
Beginning this school year (i.e., 2010-2011), the Northampton Area School District will be implementing Tier I or primary SWPBS interventions in our Borough Elementary Schools, the Northampton Area Middle School, and Washington's Crossing. Over the course of the next three years, the Northampton Area School District will be implementing Tier I Positive Behavior Supports in all of our schools, while working toward providing students with more individualized and intensive interventions, as needed.
